Rohtang Pass in January

Rohtang Pass is 51 kms from Manali town and with an altitude of 4111 metres on the Manali Keylong highway. Due to its altitude, there is heavy snowfall in winters.

During the January month, there’s always heavy snowfall. The roads are blocked for the visitors as vehicles once get stuck due to heavy snow cannot be removed. The snow covers upto 5-6 feet. To travel on this way, the permission is given by Indian Army after it is well inspected that the roads are cleared  and are safe to travel. Therefore during this month, tourists are not allowed to Rohtang Pass and they can enjoy the snow in Solang valley which is not of that height and can enjoy there all sorts of adventurous sports. Generally, Rohtang Pass is closed on Tuesdays.

  • Do not forget to carry heavy woolens for Rohtang pass as it is a very cold place all round the year. You also have the option of getting this clothing on rent on the way to Rohtang Pass or you can buy at Manali market.

Located 51 km from Manali town Rohtang pass is the most visited destination to enjoy snow. It is at a height of 4111 meters on the Manali Keylong highway.

During the month February, Rohtang Pass is blocked as there is always heavy snowfall during January and February, it is not safe during this time and therefore visitors are not allowed to enter the pass. During this period unexpected snow showers are experienced and if they are heavy, vehicles are stuck and there’s no safety measures could be taken and this is the reason the roads are blocked. The snow in the pass during this time would be of 4-5 feet high. It varies accordingly, if there’s less snowfall and the roads after inspection are safe then , the roads are opened for visitors. During this time as the roads to Rohtang Pass are blocked, snow and the sports like paragliding ,skiing and snow biking are  enjoyed in Solang valley which is about 8500 ft high. Atal Tunnel may or may not open due to weather conditions prevailing at that time.

The highest point on Manali – Keylong highway is the Rohtang Pass with the altitude of 4111 metres. It is the most favorite spot to enjoy the snow. People can enjoy watching snow on these hills almost throughout the year. The Pass is 51 km from Manali town.

Is Rohtang pass open in March?

During the month of March, the roads to Rohtang Pass are blocked due to heavy snow showers from the month of January and even in March unexpected snow showers are experienced, it is unsafe to travel on these roads as they are covered with heavy snow. The snow during this month is mostly of 3-4 feet and vehicles cannot move there. The permission to enter the roads after complete check of safety measures and clearance of snow is given by Indian Army. Tourists can enjoy snow in Solang valley, which is 10 km from Manali and with altitude of 8500 ft. The temperature is sub zero in march month and extreme weather conditions build up at any point of time leading to heavy snowfall sometimes.
