Kufri hill station is located in the southern part of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 2510 meters above sea level near Shimla. Kufri is a small but famous tourist destination. The place derives its name from the word ‘Kufr’, which means ‘lake’ in the local language. Due to the attraction associated with this place, tourists come here throughout the year. Mahasu Peak, Great Himalayan Nature Park, and Fagu are some of the major tourist destinations in Kufri. Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas; it is an ideal place for nature lovers and adventure lovers.

The place is also popular for various adventure activities like hiking, camping and trekking. Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy various sports like skiing, tobogganing, go-karting, and horse riding during their stay in Kufri. In addition to adventure activities, horses are used to travel to inaccessible places.

Best Time to Visit kufri

The best time to visit is the months of November to March when there is a lot of snowfall, but Kufri loses its charm due to lack of snow during the summer season. Kufri is famous for skiing and other snow activities, whether you go on summer days or winter it gives you a worldly feel.

How to Reach Kufri

The best way to reach Kufri is to reach Shimla and then you can hire a taxi or take a local bus. Shimla to kufri distance is 15km and it will take one hour to reach. Shimla is well connected to Delhi, Chandigarh and Kullu-Manali by roadways, by airline and by railways.

Pabbar Valley

Pabbar is one of the eye-catching valleys of Himachal Pradesh. This valley is isolated as it is not known to many tourists to Himachal Pradesh. Adventurous activities like Trekking, Paragliding, Rafting, etc can be experienced here. The Rivers Rohru, Shelapani and Kharapathar come under the Pabbar Valley region. The valley has fruit laden orchards and swift flowing streams. The valley is also known for the ancient temples and their architecture. Khara Pathar here is famous for the thick green forests, great view, walk and hike trails and the charming apple orchards. The famous temples Hateshwari in Kharapathar and Shikru Devta temple in Rohru are situated in this valley.

Pabbar Valley is 85 km from Shimla and it is well accessible with good roads.

Chindi

Chindi is an excellent off-beat destination. The area is filled with apple orchards and surrounded with thick forests. Even though off-beaten, has good facilities, small markets and accommodation facilities. The area has several temples and display of traditional craftsmanship. The main temples are Mamleshwara Mahadev, Kamakshya Mata, Mahunag Ardhnarishwara and Aledi Mahadev. Karsog valley just below Chindi is a good picnic spot.

Chindi is 87 km from Shimla and easily reachable by road.

Darlaghat

Darlaghat is 41 km from Shimla. The Ambuja Cement factory is located here. This place is famous for the Darlaghat sanctuary which host animals like leopard, Black Bear, Sambhals, Wild Boars, Red Jungle Fowls and barking Deer. Many migratory birds are also seen here. The best season to visit is from October to April.

Arkhi, 17 km from Darlaghat is also a nice place to visit for the peaceful and clean atmosphere with small villages around. A temple of Lutroo Mahadev in Arkhi is worth visiting. 22 km from Darlaghat is Bharidhar where an annual fair called ‘Bari Jatra’ is celebrated on 14 June every year. On this day palanquins of five Pandavas from nearby village are being worshipped as their local diety.

Kasauli

Kasauli is 73 km from Shimla. Kasauli is off beat as it is away from the normal route to Shimla from Chandigarh or Delhi.

Kasauli is a small hill station surrounded with pine, oak and huge horse-chestnut trees. The places of interest in Kasauli are the Monkey Point, Baptist Church, Central Research Institute, Baba Balaknath temple and Shirdi Sai Baba mandir.

Fagu

Fagu is a tiny village, including rare views of vivid dales and snow clad peaks. The countryside is very picturesque with fruit gardens and terraced fields. The entire atmosphere of Fagu is very romantic. Most of Fagu is covered with Himalayan spruce and cedar.

Fagu is 22 km from Shimla and the approach is easily accessible.

Wild Flower Hall

Wild flower hall is situated at an altitude of 2,498 m and 13 km from Shimla on Hindustan-Tibet Road. Nestling among thick flora and fauna, the Wild Flower Hall commands a breathtaking view of the snows.

Mashobra

Situated on Shimla-Naldehra road 10 kilometers from Shimla at a height of 7700 feet. It is a place of unique beauty, and is an ideal interlude beneath the oaks and the pines. Featuring beautiful gardens  it is a popular weekend spot, lined  with innumerable picnic spots. Stone benches have been strategically placed all over the grassy knolls, where you can sit back and enjoy views of the Dhauladhar Range. About 3 km from Mashobra is the lovely resort of Craignano (7,800 feet).

Naldehra

Naldehra, is situated at an altitude of 6706 feet and is 25 km from Shimla on Shimla- Tattapani road. Naldehra houses the oldest and the highest  golf course in India. It is a famous picnic spot and one can have leisure pine lined forest walks and horse rides. Its beauty has attracted the film industry and this place has featured in many Hindi movies.

Tattapani

It is 51 km from Shimla and well known for hot sulfurous springs.  One can enjoy fishing and playing in the water.

Kufri

Kufri is the hottest spot to be during winters, because everyone lands up here to ski and throw snowballs at each other. Situated at distance of 16 km from Shimla and at an altitude of 2510 m above sea level it attracts bands of ski enthusiasts from all over the country drift from the snowy fields of Kufri to Narkanda in search of the finest ski slopes on which to flaunt their expertise. The Himalayan Nature Park here has a good collection of animals and birds found in the region

Fagu

Fagu  overlooking the Giri Valley , is situated on Hindustan-Tibet Road and is 23 kilometers from Shimla.  Fagu is gifted with some enchanting views of the valley and distant Himalayas. Fagu also serves as entry point for Kinnaur and Spiti, and is an ideal trekking base.

Narkanda

Situated at 66 kilometers from Shimla, on Hindustan Tibet road Narkanda, offers wonderful slopes for skiing. At an elevation of 9017 feet, it has dense pine forests. Chail

Situated at 45 kilometers from Shimla, Chail  is a lush green setting and was the former capital of the Patiala State. It also has a wildlife sanctuary It has the world’s highest cricket ground at a height of 7220 feet situated in the cantonment area , as such, is out of bounds to civilians. There is a wildlife sanctuary at a distance of 3 km from here. It is one of the few notified regions in the state where humans and wild beasts live side by side. Shimla ice Skating Rink

Shimla has the only natural ice-skating rink in India. An Ice-skating Carnival is arranged every year by the Ice-skating Club during January. During this festival, members display their skill on ice and participate in a fancy dress competition

Himachal State Museum & Library

Around two and a half kilometers from Scandal Point is Himachal State Museum and Library. The museum displays a collection of historical sculptors, paintings, coins and photos relating to the history of entire state. The museum itself is housed in a colonial building perched over hill top. The gallery also has an exquisite collection of paintings which are the last pieces of the Indian art form, the Pahari miniature art form before the Western form took over. There are dozens of Mughal and Rajasthani miniature paintings. The museum opens daily except on Mondays and public holidays.

Viceregal Lodge & Botanical Gardens

On the Observatory Hills is located Viceregal Lodge. This magnificent building was the residence of the British Viceroy Lord Dufferin. The lodge has now been converted into Indian Institute of Advanced Studies and is further 2-km from State Museum.

The Ridge

The large open space in the heart of town presents excellent view of the mountain ranges. You can sit over there and enjoy the nature beauty with Ice cream.

The Mall

The hub of Simla is the Mall, which runs along the Ridge and is crowded with tourists. It is the city’s most famous shopping center, with shops selling all items, from clothes to junk food. Most of Shimla’s landmarks are located here. The Mall further joins the Ridge at the ‘Scandal Point’ , where a statue of Lala Lajpat Rai has been erected. This is the main shopping center of Simla with restaurants

Prospect Hill

Crowned by Kamna Devi temple, it is 15-min walk from Boileauganj on Shimla-Bilaspur road.

Glenn

Its about 4 km walk from the Ridge through dense Forests, a sprightly stream flows through the Glen forests a It is a famous picnic spot. Annandale : Beyond the Glen is Annandale, another picnic spot. The big open ground rarely found in the hills is covered with deodar forests.

Elysium Hill

On the road leading through Lakkar Bazaar, houses the famous Auckland House, the former residence of Viceroy Lord Auckland. It is a well-known girls’ school now.

Chadwick Falls

These are the 67 meters high water falls which come streaming down from the Summer Hill. The falls are set amidst thick forest at a height of 1586 meters. The falls are at their best after monsoons. You can go and explore the tracks in the forest on your own, deodar trees line the forest. There are also some old temples close by and a fair is held here in April every year.
